Mumbai, September 09, 2007: On a Sunday evening at Mumbai to have over 500 people at a corporate quiz is truly amazing. An acknowledgement of the same by Pickbrain was perhaps the most appropriate way to commence the proceedings. A prelim perceived to be tough by the teams surprisingly had teams qualifying with very fairly high scores.

The prelim resulted in four teams from TCS with one each from Indian Hotels and Tata Teleservices in the internal track final. The quiz looked evenly poised in the first two rounds but as the buzzer started playing a role, the defending champions from TCS (M. Suresh Kumar and Aniruddha Dutta) started underling their presence on stage with some breathtaking answers that were made to look almost matter of fact.

Towards the final moments of the quiz, a battle emerged for the second spot between two TCS teams. As the Quizmaster fired the final question, “Who is the author of “The Romance of Tata Steel”?, the young TCS duo of Hashim S N and Sandeep Rajpurohit pushed the buzzer and said “R M LALA” to clinch the second place.

“Wow! What a final!” was perhaps the feeling everyone had at the end of the external track of the quiz. Six teams that qualified were- Cadbury India, IMRB, Pinstorm Technologies, Deutsche Bank, Axis Bank and Standard Chartered Bank.

The final, literally moved from one question to another with teams in a huddle like a marathon. The teams had a choice of three clues per question and would get 15 on the first clue, 10 on the second and 5 on the third. The negative was a constant minus 10.

On the first clue of the first question, Standard Chartered Bank took the plunge and cracked MCI, stunning one and all. On the next two questions, Deutsche Bank truly rallied from behind to crack Nabisco and Sony Pictures to inch past the rest. The battle was so intense that the teams requested for an out of turn score display. With one question remaining the race for the national final slot seemed far from over.

The final question was truly dramatic. With all the teams giving it a go on the final question, a negative was scored on each clue and a mature Deutsche Bank team decided to watch the “blood bath” and ensured a place for themselves in the national final.

Mr.Satish Pradhan, Group HR, Tata Sons gave away the prizes and appreciated Tata Crucible and Quizmaster Giri Pickbrain for ushering in an era of quizzing that revolves around thinking and problem solving and not mere recall of facts. All in all, both the finals were an edge of the seat entertainer or in very Mumbai terms, a true blockbuster.

All roads now lead to Taj Lands End for the National Finale on 20th September 2007. Many would not want to miss a national final for the first time in the country with 12 teams on stage.
