The Odisha edition of the quiz saw an apt celebration of Teachers Day as two professors from Xavier University Bhubaneswar clinched a nail-biting quiz that went down to the final question. Earlier, as the evening dawned, Pickbrain dished out a tricky mix of questions that foxed many regular teams. It also reflected how the competition at Odisha was way larger than the handful of teams that would dominate a quiz a decade ago. The six teams that made it were:
The final saw the team from XUM get started quickly on the buzzer along with Indian Oil. Both these teams had won the quiz in past editions and it seemed like an old rivalry unfold between them. However, things changed quickly with Loreal and Infosys also scoring well. The surprise came from the Railways team which came up with some brilliant answers but took too many negatives to squander their own quest.
In the meantime, the duo from XUM started doing well and established a good lead. They however, much to the surprise of the quizmaster and the audience, chose to keep their scoring strategy at a 100 and not play at a higher value. The witty quizmaster nudged them saying You should take lessons from your students on backing yourself at a higher value.
The Indian Oil team which was right behind XUM went for the higher value strategy and got past the professors with one question to go. That left the professors with no option but to get the last question right if they had to win. As the audience sat at the edge of their seats, the profs went for the final question and got it right to win a memorable victory, given that it was Teachers Day.
The chief guest Mr. Manoj Panda, the Head of TCS Bhubaneswar, appreciated the teams and observed, very accurately, that the benchmark of the quiz was rising because there are so many opportunities in the state that is helping the state to retain talent. He quipped Talent has always been there, now the increased opportunities are helping keep them back here.
